3.11 Judging by Team Members and/or Family Members (International)

3.11 Judging by Team Members and/or Family Members (International)

Since a few weeks Reps were instructed not to let CBJ’s who were related to a BBQ team cooking at that Competition to Judge or to the renumbering.
Due to the problems this rule gives outside the US it is slightly changed.

Recently the KCBS Board of Directors clarified Rep Advisory 3.11:

3.11 Judging by Team Members and/or Family Members

Question: Can team and/or family members serve as a judge and/or Number Changer if their team is entered in the contest?

Opinion: No. If a team is cooking at a contest, a team member(s) and/or family member(s) of that team cannot judge or change numbers at that contest.

A Family Member is defined as a person living at the same address and/or immediate Family which is considered to be Husband, Wife, significant other, children, Father, Mother, Sister or Brother.

The team/family member(s) may work Leftover, Table Captain, or Turn-in (Except Number Changer), if assigned by the Rep at that contest.

The team/family member will abide by the “Fraternization Rule” concerning being in and around the cook sites, including the team in question.

Participating team/family members must advise the Reps/Judge Coordinator of their relationship with the participating team to avoid conflict and disappointment.

Violation of this Advisory will constitute the initiating of the “3 Step Rule”. BOD 6/14/17

Due to KCBS International being in their infancy stage in many countries and relatively more mature in other countries, we feel the need to further consider Rep Advisory 3.11 Internationally.

As we grow and train judges it will become easier to have KCBS certified judges.
Often during a contest, we find ourselves short of qualified judges and need to find untrained people to judge when qualified family members are available.
KCBS International will use the prior “Best Practices” standards used by KCBS for seating family members.

3.11 Team or Family Member Judging at a Contest Where Their Team is Cooking

Question: Can team and/or family members serve as a judge and/or Number Changer if their team is entered in the contest?

Opinion for team members judging: NO. If a team is cooking at a contest, a team member(s) of that team cannot judge or change numbers at that contest.

Opinion for family members judging: YES. If the judge is NOT considered a regular team member AND follows the *fraternization rule. See KCBS 2017 Official Rules and Regulations/Judging Procedures/ 1) Judges may not fraternize with teams on turn-in day until conclusion of judging.

The team/family member(s) may work Leftover, Table Captain, or Turn-in (Except Number Changer), if assigned by the Rep at that contest.

Participating team/family members must advise the Reps/Judge Coordinator of their relationship with the participating team to avoid conflict and disappointment.

Violation of this Advisory will constitute the initiating of the “3 Step Rule”. (BOD 6/14/17; July Bullsheet, page 10-“From the KCBS Board of Directors; or go to https://www.kcbs.us/news.php)

If the contest does not have enough certified judges, it is up to the discretion of the KCBS Rep whether or not to seat family members (who are qualified and have met the standards listed above) as judges.

When we are in an area where Competition BBQ is growing, we feel it would be in the teams’ best interest to have a certified KCBS judge, who knows the standards by which to judge and the criteria for each score, rather than to seat someone who is not at all familiar with Competition BBQ or how to judge.
We also believe in the honesty and impartial judging of our trained international CBJs and their dedication to the oath they take.
